Urgent WordPress Security Release 4.1.2

WordPress Security ReleaseIs your site running on WordPress? If so, either you or your web developer should update it immediately to the latest version 4.1.2. This is an important security release and addresses a critical security flaw that will allow a malicious user to infect your site. The technical term for this particular flaw is cross-site scripting vulnerability. Some plugins also appear to be vulnerable to the attack.

What does this mean to you?

It means if your site becomes infected, then it could become just another website used to send out thousands of spam email to the world. Or visitors to your site, your customers, could become infected themselves.

This would result in blacklisting your website on search engines and slowing your site considerably. And when you become blacklisted on sites like Google, your site will stop being displayed in the search results. That could lead to a death blow for any business.

What should you do?

As with any update, be sure to take a full backup of your site files and database prior to running the update, just in case something breaks. After updating your WorPress site, be sure to check the plugins and run any of their updates. Watch for the plugin updates over the coming days.

Some hosting companies and web developers are proactive for these issues and set the WordPress core files to auto-update whenever there is a new release. Even if this is the case, you should still verify it has been done because sometimes there are problems with these auto-updates. A manual update may still be required.
